the issue of ,underdevelopment of the local communities has given Africa a terrible nightmare; this has so much brought about the call for the scraping of the traditional leadership institution. what is your view onthe issue?

One good reason I don't want to see Africa Westernized! Progressive Insurance has a commercial out on almost every channel in the USA using the sixties slogan "Power to the People". In the commercial a woman selling insurance to a man says to him...

What is AIDS OR HIV?

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections.

What are the early symptoms of HIV infection?

Many people do not develop any symptoms when they first become infected with HIV. Some people, however, get a flu-like illness within three to six weeks after exposure to the virus. This illness, called Acute HIV Syndrome, may include fever, headache, tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea and enlarged lymph nodes (organs of the immune system that can be felt in the neck, armpits and groin). These symptoms usually disappear within a week to a month and are often mistaken for another viral infection.

During this period, the quantity of the virus in the body will be high and it spreads to different parts, particularly the lymphoid tissue. At this stage, the infected person is more likely to pass on the infection to others.

More persistent or severe symptoms may not surface for several years, even a decade or more, after HIV first enters the body in adults, or within two years in children born with the virus. This period of "asymptomatic" infection varies from individual to individual. Some people may begin to have symptoms as soon as a few months, while others may be symptom-free for more than 10 years. However, during the "asymptomatic" period, the virus will be actively multiplying, infecting, and killing cells of the immune system.

China-Africa commitments applauded

The head of the UN food agency has welcomed the declaration by the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation underlining the critical role that investment in food security, agriculture and infrastructure plays in feeding people on the continent.

The World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran noted that for decades the agency has helped people in China and Africa access the food they need to live healthy, productive lives.

“We have helped farmers feed their families, while supporting… Continue

Assembly shop for efficient stoves launched in Darfur

An assembly facility for fuel-efficient stoves has been launched in El Fasher, the capital of the Darfur region, in Sudan. The Berkeley, California-based Darfur Stoves Project (DSP), in partnership with Oxfam America and the Sudanese organisation, Sustainable Action Group (SAG), are an alliance behind the project.

The assembly facility is the last stop on a global technology solution supply chain that starts with testing and design in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and… Continue

Uganda partners with media to fight HIV/AIDS

The Ugandan government has formed an alliance with the media to focus on prevention programmes, in re-shaping its strategy in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) director general, Kihumuro Apuuli, said the recent surge in the HIV statistics has forced the government to focus on prevention rather than treatment because of the increasing number of new infections annually.

According to UAC, Uganda registered more than 110,000 new HIV infections and 63,000 HIV-related deat… Continue

The study, “Africa’s Infrastructure: A Time for Transformation” finds that Africa has the weakest infrastructure in the world, but ironically Africans in some countries pa… Continue

Poor African's to suffer due to high food prices

Millions of people in dozens of poor countries are in desperate need of emergency humanitarian aid, despite good global cereal harvests this year. This due to stubbornly high food prices, the United Nations agricultural agency warned in a report released yesterday.

Critical food insecurity is affecting 31 countries and the situation is particularly acute in East Africa, where prolonged drought and mounting conflict have left an estimated 20 million people in need of food aid, according to the F… Continue

Obama: Prosperity is in Africa's future

ACCRA, Ghana -- President Barack Obama is promising to make sure that U.S. aid to Africa gets to the people who need it most, such as farmers and entrepreneurs, and not Western consultants and administrators.

In a speech Saturday in Ghana, Obama said that is why $3.5 billion in food assistance will focus on new methods and technologies for farmers, instead of simply sending U.S. goods to Africa.

The American president, making his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa, says wealthy countries like the U.S. have a lot to gain by opening their doors to more goods and services from Africa.

He says that will help reduce poverty and create wealth on the continent, while creating new markets and demand for American goods.
